HAIR REPLACEMENT STUDIOS Printer Friendly Version

HOW DO I CHOOSE A QUALIFIED HAIR REPLACEMENT STUDIO?

Talking to a professional about your hair loss or transformation options should take place before you purchase a wig or begin medical treatment. To begin with, you must find a reputable studio, which may take some homework.

For possible referrals, you may want to consult your regular hairstylist, friends, or a family member who has an association with a hair replacement studio. Another option is to call your local chapter of the American Cancer Society or Alopecia Areata Foundation. They may be able to provide you with a list of qualified centers. Your local telephone directory, newspaper, or magazines may also provide useful information.

When researching for reputable centers, look for the following listings in your Yellow Pages directory:

HAIR REPLACEMENT--Look for centers that specialize in women's cranial prostheses (wigs). Most hair replacement centers cater primarily to men.

PROSTHETIC DEVICES--Some of these centers offer cranial prostheses in addition to other prosthestics.

WIGS--Under this category, look for studios that indicate that they specialize in offering solutions to hairloss problems due to chemotherapy and alopecia.

After discovering all the options and examining them, the next step to finding out more is be making an appointment for a consultation. These are private meetings for asking questions and finding out more about your hairloss options. An experienced professional will be ready and willing to address all of your questions and concerns about hair loss.

Some personal consultations carry a fee, so find out what you can expect before you go in.

The following are a few questions you might want to ask in order to evaluate a studio:

ASK THEM...

How long have you been in business?

What is the experience level of your technicians?

Do they take continuing education courses and seminars, or have they earned any awards or been recognized for any accomplishements?

Would it be possible for me to talk to some of their other clients?

ASK YOURSELF...

How professional and knowledgeable is the staff?

Do they understand not only the technical side, but the emotional aspects of hair loss as well?

Do they seem genuinely interested in helping me as a person?

Am I comfortable with what I see and hear here, and do I have confidence in this person?

ITEMS A STUDIO MAY DISCUSS WITH YOU DURING A CONSULTATION...

The type and stage of treatment you are in.

What your needs and desires are.

Explaining what a cranial prosthesis is and showing you the various types available.

What would work for you, why...and why not.

This information is to assist you in choosing a hair replacement studio. Remember, there is no such thing as asking too many questions. Review the information you receive and be aware that the bottom line is that you need to feel comfortable with your hair replacement specialist. The more informed you are, and more knowledge you will gain, and the easier it will be to work together for your satisfaction.
